Readers of the NY Post were informed recently that the Lab School, a well-regarded public school in Manhattan, plans to eliminate “leveled” math classes. https://nypost.com/2021/06/08/parents-panic-as-top-nyc-school-to-end-advanced-math-program/ The teacher who started the classes, Maggie Boyd Feurtado, says in the Post,
“It’s like not allowing any kids in a daycare to walk until all of them learn to walk,” she said. “It doesn’t work. Advanced kids don’t want to belabor the same material. And the kids who need the extra attention won’t get what they need.”
Well, we here at Lost Liberal believe measures to improve access and increase equity should be implemented in the school subject that matters more to many Americans than math, and that’s sports. Just think about how important sports are to the average American, and it will become immediately clear that students are not being equally prepared for their future in the major leagues. So, it looks like only 1 white dude is on the team. During the Reign of Obama, we were lectured that racism is evident when there is “disparate impact” – i.e. the “outcome” of a racially neutral policy is all that matters to prove discrimination. If we apply that logic (though I hesitate to call it that, since it is fallacious) to the domain of sports, well….. there is some pretty “disparate” impact going on. And somehow, race hustlers like LeBron, who participate in this oppression of short-clumsy-melanin-deficient human beings, are remaining silent.
